Are you female and over forty three years old. Are you in a relationship, or married? This article is relevant to you and should be read closely. It is about the onset of the menopause, even if you appear to have no symptoms at all of the menopause that is no reason to ignore what is written here. It is even more important if your periods are no longer regular, and you are beginning to suffer from hot flushes. You may feel this doesn’t involve you but if your friends have started the menopause then statistically you will have too even if you don’t realise it.
They feel, and because of that, even you feel a menopause test might well be a good thing at this time in your life. Better to know where you stand. First you need to step back and think about a couple of things.
Number one thought is that no test for the menopause will be one hundred percent accurate. Some lay claims to getting it right nine times out of ten, but do you even know what the test shows?
The standard menopause test is a urine test. Soaking your urine in a strip will show the level of FSH present, this stands for Follicle Stimulating Hormone. This hormone makes the ovaries release the eggs every month during the female cycle. The level of FSH found in the test gives an idea of where your body is in regard to the menopause.
When ovary egg production stops, that is the menopause. At the same time, as if to compensate the FSH levels rise. The menopause test is a way of demonstrating this, but this should never be taken at face value
You see the pituitary gland normally only produces FSH immediately prior to egg release. The rest of the time there is little or no FSH present. Now if you take the menopause test and your ovaries are still producing eggs, and it is that time of the month, then your FSH level will be high anyway.
What this means is you need to test yourself over a minimum of two weeks. If you are not pre menopausal then the FSH level will decrease dramatically. If you are menopausal it will remain consistently present. Be aware that oral contraception and patch contraception can distort the results.
In a nutshell don’t be a menopausal pregnancy. You must continue to be careful when making love until you are absolutely certain you are in the menopause. Birth control is necessary indeed vital at this time of your life.
To summarise, it will take more than one positive FSH test to determine that you are in or about to enter the menopause. Don’t take hot flushes and irregular periods as proof that your child bearing years are over, you could be in for a nasty shock
