The other day I walked past my son, who was studying at the kitchen table. He had a science test coming up, so I asked him what grade he expected. I was very surprised at his answer.
He told me that of course he’d be getting an A, he expected nothing less. I thought that was great, his self-confidence and assurance. And then I started musing on this further.
I asked myself whether things were like that when I was young, and I remembered that they were for the most part. Remember back into childhood – didn’t we expect that things would always work out and that good things would happen for us? At some point along the path of growing up, many of us stopped believing in this. What happened?
I understand that life isn’t always a bed of roses. Things happen, and we stop having nave belief that all will be just fine. Still, there are some people who keep that optimism throughout their lifetimes.
Interestingly, people who are optimistic seem to have lives that work more smoothly and easily. Have you noticed this? Have you ever wondered if there is a connection between people’s outlooks and their outcomes?
Why not do a natural experiment and try to copy those people? Spend a day being happy and expecting good things. You’ll be surprised to see how much better you feel, and how many good things you will suddenly notice.
When you are in that mindset, you’ll find that life treats you better and most things seem possible. You feel capable and on top of things. I am betting if you try and see how it goes, you’ll compare how you feel at the end of that day with how you generally feel and you’ll decide to make a permanent change.
My son, by the way, did great on his exam. He got an A+. One of these days I’m going to ask him about his “attraction tricks.” When he tells me how he did it, I’ll be sure to share his tips with you.
