The first step is to prepare the work area. Choose an area that has proper ventilation, since there can be fumes. There should be no children in that area while you are working on this. Have newspapers spread out in the area so your floors or counters will not get messy. Make sure there is water nearby such as a sink.
Now you must gather 6 oz of cold water and two ounces of lye. The water needs to be cold since the lye will become hot. You should always pour the lye into the water, never the other way around. Do not allow your skin to come in contact with this mixture. Mix it well and then set it aside for now.
After you are done mixing it, set it side so that it can cool down. Next get a saucepan and mix coconut oil and Crisco oil together. Stir this until you notice it becomes a heated liquid. Once it is in this state, set it aside next to the water and lye mixture. Give both of these time to cool off, as you want them to be in the same temperature. The temperature of these two mixtures are 95-100 degrees.
Once both are in the same temperature, you can begin pouring the lye mixture into the oils. These two mixtures will begin to react to one another and will also begin to neutralize. You should continue stirring until this becomes thick.
Once your mixture has become thick you can add the fragrance of your choice. Keep in mind that this fragrance needs to be one specially made for handmade soap. Once this is done, you can place it in the mold for twenty-four hours to cool off. Once it is cool, you can begin cutting the mold into bars.
