Almost all religions impose to its adherents certain rules concerning the diet and the foods which are or are not allowed to be consumed. We have once Muslims who don’t consume pork, Jewish who don’t accept amphibians or Buddhists who totally interdict the killing of animals and their consuming. All the rules derived from the words of the religious deities and are mentioned in every holy book of the different religion.
Muslims, for example, are not allowed to eat pork, pork products, animals over which the name of Allah was not pronounced before the slaughtering, animal carcass or birds of prey. The rules are enforced stringently and all meat sold in halal butcheries or fast foods is authorized to be called halal by a certificate where it is stated that the meat obeys the Sharia law. There are also specific precisions about how the animal should be slaughtered. But what is halal, in the first place?
The word is of Arabic origin and it means “lawful” or “legal”. According to the Islamic law, it is labeled on products being permitted to use or engage in. The term is used on a series of different products of food or other, but most commonly it designs meat which complies with all the Islamic rules. And it is quite understandable why they are so strictly abode by: every Muslim knows they were dictated by the prophet Mohammad.
But that is not all. Muslims also care about the way in which the animal must be slaughtered. The Muslim method of slaughtering an animal is called Dhabihah, and was also given by the prophet Mohammad. That the animals must be respected is one of the key ideas, and in this way, they are slaughtered with a sharp knife, cutting the jugular vein and allowing the blood to drain completely. The spine cord or the nervous system are not affected, so the animal is conscious all the time. Measures used in other Christian countries, like electrocuting the animal, for example, are not allowed to be used.
