Diet, Stress and Genes Can Cause Pimples

This article intends to discuss a few of the causes of acne. The causes that I am going to include in this page are disputed by many people because of little understanding with regards to acne in general. They debate whether these specific causes actually contribute to developing acne or not. I intend to clarify this misunderstanding about these causes.

It is very essential to understand primarily how acne develops. Acne is due to blockage in the skin pores and/or hair follicles. This blockage involves sebum or oil trapped beneath the blockage. The two basic components to produce this blockage are sebum production by the sebaceous glands and the size of the pores. Any factor that affects these two components is eligible causes of acne.

Diet is one of the disputed causes of acne and a lot of people say there is no relationship between a person’s diet and acne problems. If you considered what I’ve discussed above, then you will agree with me that diet does have a relationship with acne. More specifically, diet rich in carbohydrates and sugar.

Foods that are rich in carbohydrates and sugar increase the levels of insulin in your bloodstream. High levels of insulin will lead to a surge in hormone levels specifically, androgen. Androgen has the effect of making your oil glands secrete more sebum. Increase production of sebum in your skin can cause blockage which in turn, develops to pimples.

Stress is another disputed cause. Its process is similar to how diet can cause acne. Stress causes androgen surge also but this time, it’s due to an over stimulation of the adrenal glands.

Lastly, heredity as a cause of acne is also being disputed. No, acne is not a genetically passed trait. There is no study that can conclude that. But genes can pass physiological characteristics that can make a person prone to getting pimples. Examples would be small-pored skin type, hyperactive oil glands, hyperactive adrenal glands, hormonal imbalances, and sensitive skin types. These can be passed from parent to child and make the child prone to developing acne.
