Dr Kwang Yul Cha – Holding Back The Clock

Dr Kwang Yul Cha is a medical doctor, born in 1952 in Korea. He is an internationally known specialist in the treatment of infertility and a pioneer in the use of stem cells to restore ageing skin. His work on reproductive medicine and infertility made the cover of the September 30, 1991, edition of Time Magazine in a story entitled, ‘Curing infertility, more than just a dream.’

Cha Health Systems is a hugely successful healthcare group founded by Dr Cha. The group started out in 1960 with a 20-bed women’s hospital and now has four general hospitals in Korea in addition to one in America, the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in LA, California.

Stems cells are found in animals and plants. They have the ability to divide indefinitely in the undifferentiated state, meaning they have not gone down the path that determines what kind of cell they are ultimately going to be, skin, heart, bone, nerve, etc. This is what is called, ‘pluripotence’, meaning not fixed as to potential development and capable of differentiating into one of many cell types.

Cha Biotech was founded in 2000 as part of Cha Health Systems. There, Dr Cha has participated in the establishment of skincare treatments using stem cells. Instead of human cells, they use stem cells derived from plants. Here, they help to protect skin from deteriorating and stimulate to manufacture its own, native stem cells.

One of Cha’s treatments combines harvested stem cells with a special medium designed to improve elasticity and to stimulate the skin to produce its own cells and increase collagen production. Another treatment uses the patient’s own stem cells to reduce facial wrinkles or as an aid in augmentation procedures. Cha Biotech also maintain a stem cell bank to enable patients to store their own stem cells to use in procedures for several years.

These primitive cells have therapeutic indications other than just holding back the years. At UCLA, scientists conducted a clinical trial employing adult cells in subjects with Parkinson’s Disease. Five years after treatment, the motor skills of participants showed improvements of up to eighty per cent. Dr Cha established the Chaum Life Center as part of Cha Health Systems. They provide personalized preventative health care. Every treatment, even every meal, for every resident is based on a personal diagnostic profile.
