Eat Less But Feel Full

Hungry? Take Half a Serving

By now you should be more in sync with your hunger, and you should not be in the habit of eating when you’re not hungry. Remember: your body understands itself. But the body isn’t perfect. It takes about 20 minutes for your gut to tell your brain it’s full, so you can eat way more than your body needs before feeling full. These tips can help solve this problem.

Anytime you’re hungry and about to eat, take half a serving. Keep the other half close: you can always eat it if the first wasn’t sufficient. Eat the first half and wait 10 minutes, so you give your body time to digest and let you know what it wants. Listen to your body. Still hungry? Go ahead, eat the other half. Not hungry? Save it for later. Congratulations, you’ve just cut your IN by half for that meal, and you’re on your way to a fitter you.

ACTION STEP

Take half a serving next time you eat a meal.

ACTION STEP REVISITED

Apply this strategy for the rest of today and tomorrow. Observe how less you eat.

Hungry? Put the fork down

Along the same lines, put the fork down between each mouthful. Chew your food. Savor it. Eating is a pleasure. Enjoy a conversation with your friends or family while you eat. And put the fork down between each mouthful. You’ll be surprised when your body tells you you’re full. It will be before your plate is empty. By giving your body time for your brain and digestive system to communicate, you’re less likely to overeat, and less likely to end up with a positive energy balance.

ACTION STEP

Put the fork down between each mouthful during your next meal. See if you feel full before you finish your plate.

ACTION STEP REVISITED

Employ this eating habit for the rest of today and tomorrow. Observe the decrease in the amount of food you eat.
