No doubt you have heard someone say that Chocolate is good for you.
It’s fun to believe that something we love to eat could actually be doing our bodies good — despite all the indications otherwise.
Well, in this case it is true.
Well…sorta.
Before you load up on M&M’s and Snickers, understand that while pure chocolate is indeed good for you, it is what they put INTO the chocolate that can be bad for you and make you overweight. Sugar, cream and even the nuts all contain the fats and calories that pack on the pounds.
Okay, chances are you already knew all of that.
So let’s talk about WHY chocolate is good for you.
1. Chocolate contains several compounds that are mildly stimulating — and that makes us feel better. Pheny-something-or-other and Lethy-whatsit and Theobro-who-cares are chemicals in chocolate the have pleasure-causing effects.
Since these feel good compounds are present in very small amounts, we need to eat more chocolate. Right? Of course. 😉
2. A bar of good quality dark chocolate contains more phenols (10 times as much) than an orange.
Why should you care? I had no idea — so I looked it up. I’ll save you the trouble.
Phenols thin the blood — thus inhibiting blood clots — which can help prevent heart attacks and strokes.
That’s cool. And good.
3. Chocolate can prevent Magnesium deficiency. Again, who cares. Right?
Well, you should. Besides being a good excuse to give your spouse for eating more chocolate, getting a good supply of magnesium can help prevent many problems — from asthma to diabetes to migraines and even, get this, stuttering. Not to mention lessen the effects of premenstrual syndrome.
Another good source of magnesium is broccoli. Darn! Didn’t want to know that, did you?
4. Last, but not least, chocolate contains caffeine. ‘Nuff said.
