The Different Types Of Pillows Available For Purchase

People don’t probably wonder at the history of pillows but these soft cushions that make sleeping feel so good have existed since ancient civilizations. In Egypt, they were used by royalty and in China decorated in the most elaborate designs. Today, everyone uses a pillow when they sleep. In fact, pillows make up 11% of all sales related to beddings.

Pillows are made with all kinds of materials. In ancient China, there were pillows made out of wood, metal, porcelain, and even stone! These days, pillows are kinder to the body. They are made with soft and light materials such as foam, synthetic fiber, and the coveted feathers or down.

Using these materials, a cloth, normally 20″x30″ or 26″x26″ is filled up and stitched close. A pillow case is then slipped over the pillow to keep it clean and give it a different texture and design.

Well designed pillows support the head and neck by adjusting to the curves. You’ll know that a pillow is right for you when you wake up and feel good. Pillows that are too high or too low will give you a stiff neck.

There are many kinds of pillows that support other areas of the body aside from the head and neck. Body pillows are designed to support the whole body and seat cushions to protect the back from slouching.

Travel pillows are shaped like a letter “U” and conveniently slip over the shoulders and neck to provide you head support of you wish to sleep while sitting down.

There are many other kinds of pillows as well: the lumbar pillow for the lower back, the donut pillow for the tailbone, and the nursing pillow for breast-feeding to name a few.

To maintain the pillows, keep them dust and microbe free. Give them a regular wash and when dry, leave them out in the sun to air them out. Eventually though, a pillow will become too deformed and worn-out to be of use. When this happens, it’s time to go out and buy a new one.
