The world is quickly becoming aware of our negative impact on the environment and many are exploring different ways to lessen the strain on our earth. In 2000, vegetarianism was surveyed at 2.5% of Americans and since then it has risen to 6.7 in a 2006 survey.
So why should you be a vegetarian? Something that has really set natures clock into overdrive is the high levels of methane gas that are produced from 1.3 cows around the world. Each cow is producing 800 to 1,000 liters of methane gas each day. Methane causes heat to become trapped in the earth’s atmosphere, causing heat to build and global warming to surge.
Eating meat makes you vulnerable to diseases such as mad cow disease, BIV (a bovine form of AIDS), salmonella, and e-coli poisoning. Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables increases your vitamin intake, creating a better immune system and reducing your chances of contracting any disease.
Meat also has a very high fat content. Even extra lean beef contains about 7% fat minimum. Cut out the animal fat and your body will be able to shed pounds easier because it will not be continually congested with saturated meat fats, clogging up arteries and creating heart disease.
Meat is constipating which can lead to colon cancer because it contains no fiber. When you ingest meat, it ferments in your bowels, causing painful and embarrassing gas as it slowly digests. Meat digests so slowly that it is a cause of heartburn in many people.
An George Eliot once said, “Animals are such agreeable friends, they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.”
Buying meat from the supermarket is painless and relatively easy…just put it in a plastic bag and remember to use the hand sanitizer afterwards. But what if you met the poor creature that was slaughtered a few hours ago for you? What if you could pet it? Would you tell it that it is going to be okay? Would you want to save it? Give it a name? Buttercup? Ginger? Too often Americans settle into an unthinking rut, going through the motions without thinking about anything but the price per pound. If we all thought a little more about the animal, and less about the grocery list, we might feel a little more like ratatouille tonight, instead of meatloaf.
Everyone needs food. If you require assistance, food stamps application isn’t hard to do.. You can find directions on how to apply for Texas food stamps, or for any other state in the United States where you might live.
