The goal of this example is not to make a trivial comparison between people and the prickly Joshua tree, but rather to make the point that we do not need to keep ourselves in extreme positions that are created by ourselves due to a loss of self-discipline. Develop your own ways to gain self-control. Try to learn from what others did and are doing and try to consider the many options there are for support.
So the question is, what root system do you need in order to “stick with it”? This is key. Listen to yourself. You will feel it when you can’t achieve a certain goal so it’s good to have a backup plan to combat those defeats. To overcome setbacks is the key to moving forward. Moving forward requires a mindset to not allow you to get too overwhelmed when setbacks occur, and occur they will.
