How Height Affects Dating

There is a word known as the sexual dimorphism ratio (SDR) which is defined as SDR = male height/female height. A number greater than 1.0 indicates the male is taller than the female. The average SDR for the human species is 1.08, meaning that men tend to be 8 percent taller than women.

Still with me? This boring statistic gains notice when it is related to the relationship preferences of men and women in terms of height.

Overall, men preferred an SDR of 1.09 (just about the norm), while women in general preferred an SDR of 1.14, far above the norm. In other words, women prefer men who are 14 percent taller than themselves. So, on average, that means that a woman who is 5 foot 4 inches would like better men just under 6 foot 1 inch.

But two separate studies also factored in the heights of women. SDR is inversely proportional to height, according to the results. Tall women have a low SDR, while short women have an SDR that is high.

There were some very tall women who preferred men their own height or even shorter, while some shorter women’s preferred SDR rose to 1.19, meaning they wanted to meet men nineteen percent taller than themselves. An 1.19 SDR woman who is 5 foot 1 inch tall, would strongly prefer dating a man taller than 6 feet.

Luckily, not all 5 foot 1 inch women think like this. By having a low SDR, a woman of that height would greatly increase the pool of men she could date when she joined a site such as FindTall.com.

Five foot one inch women who insist on being matched with men over 6 feet tall tend to have uneventful memberships and suffer from excessive “singleitis”. As for those who do not have such expectations, they wind up living happily ever after having met a wonderful man of any height.

Women over five foot 8 inches tall or taller are usually willing to meet men their own height or even shorter. Women who are tall as adults were probably tall since elementary school. So they are more likely to be flexible in terms of a man’s height.

Girls have a growth spurt around sixth grade and tend to stay taller than boys all through middle school. When students finish high school though, the boys are typically taller. This is because as boy and girls go through puberty, the growth hormones called androgens are released in girls before they are released in boys.

A taller height can be especially traumatic for girls during that phase of puberty when no one wants to look different. As a result, many tall girls never develop that compulsion to only date very tall men.

A female who is 6-foot-3 once shared her personal experience in dating:

“There are many guys who seem intimidated, but I view this as a filtration system to get rid of guys I don’t want to be with anyway. There are also guys with a fixation on tall women and they are also to be avoided, but you can easily figure them out – all they want to do is get you in heels, check out your hand size, talk about your height all the time, etc. How creepy. But in between those are some good guys who don’t really care that much about height and I’ve had some good boyfriends. All of them have been shorter than me it turns out.”

If you are unattached and in the mood to meet a great boyfriend, girlfriend, partner or wife, consider checking out some of those short men and very tall women you excluded in your previous searches.
