Intermittent Fasting 101

Intermittent Fasting which is often shortened to I.F. means taking a break from eating on a semi regular schedule.

The most traditional approach of using intermittent fasting is to to take a day off from eating every 48 hours. In simple terms this means you eat as normal on Thursday and then take a break form eating the next day so in this case you would not eat on Friday. You would then resume eating as normal on the Saturday and then once again fasting on the Sunday. This day on, day off method of Intermittent Fasting restricts calories over the week becaise you have periods where you are not consuming any food at all.

The method of intermittent fasting I have described above, is actually very strict. Though if you follow this method it will result in weight loss, my own view is the one day on and one day off method is simply too restrictive to work long term. In my case weekends are social and family occasions, this means most weekends do not lend themselves well to me fasting

I believe that we have to fit our diet around our lifestyle, not our lifestyle around out diet. The key to using fasting for weight loss is flexibility.

A popular way of using intermittent fasting to control your weight is using what we call a condensed eating window , this is where you only eat during a certain period, say for example you only eat between 2pm and 7pm daily. Again it is about finding what works best for you.

After almost 2 years of using Intermittent Fasting , not only as a way to lose weight, but to also maintain my current weight, I believe the most flexible and and successful method on intermittent fasting is the 24 hour break from eating once or twice per week. This allows you to still eat every day, and provides enough flexibility to fit around your lifestyle. Diets fail because they restrict and deprive, but in the two years since i became a retired deiter and have used I.F. I have not felt like that all.
