Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary nutrients for you to eat to ensure your health. Humans used to get a sufficient level of omega 3’s in their diets, but now due to better farming methods, we do not. You can eat specific foods that are elevated in these essentials fatty acids, but they’re sometimes expensive and hard to come by. Flax seeds and walnuts are wonderful sources of these acids. They aren’t that expensive, especially the flax seeds. And they are a wonderful way to get the omega 3’s you should have. Walnuts can be more expensive and give some folks stomach aches. You could eat wild caught salmon and other fish, but that’s fairly expensive to do. The most effective and cheapest ways for you to get the efas you require in your diet is to take fish-oil supplements. Sounds great! But why do you really need omega-3 efas in the first place?
It’s been known for a few years that lack of omega 3’s increases your chances of developping heart disease as well as certain forms of cancers and other diseases, such as arthritis, Alzheimer’s, and also diabetes, to name just a few. A lot of the problems, researchers believe, has to do with inflammation.
Omega 3 fatty acids are natural inflammation fighters. For instance, EPA, one of the many omega 3’s has been recently shown to help decrease inflammation and increase blood flow and joint health. Your body used EPA to create a type of chemical called resolvin. Resolvins in your body act much as asprin and ibuprofen acts, but without the side effects that both of these drugs have.
Omega 3 fatty acids also play a big roll in the creation of an essential hormone in your system called prostaglandin. Prostaglandin also affects inflammation. It’s also is related to nerve function, allergic responses, and blood pressure. It’s presence helps your kidneys and gastrointestinal tract function better. Both EPA and DHA, two of the biggest omega-3 efas, help in the creation of prostaglandin.
Finally, omega 3 efas help in making healthy cell membranes in your whole body. Cell membranes are mainly composed of fatty acids. Without sufficient omega 3’s in your body, your cells can’t communicate with each other as they should. There is certainly growing scientific evidence that this cellular level communication, or lack thereof, influences diseases like cancer and tumor growth.
