A few things start to pile up (bills, chores, overdue things), and suddenly you feel worry and anxiety creep over you. You know what symptoms to expect next: sweaty palms, nausea, trembling, and shortness of breath. There’s a moment when you think you can calm yourself down, but it’s already too strong.
Here t is, you can feel it, you seem to have no choice but to get away, or else the person sitting next to you will fell your fingernails in their hair and your teeth on their throat. The anxiety of this realization is familiar, but this is not known to be connected in any worrisome way to a serious disorder. You know that everyone around you has something they are concerned about. Stress is normal.
Fear, anger, happiness, or sadness, anxiety is just one of those things many people experience. Our natural instincts take over, and much like the instinct to fight can take over in a moment of danger, the instinct of concern and warning is it precursor. Anxiety is developed in many different situations and is spawned from many different reasons such as stress, fear of failure and rejection.
Without knowing it, there is a possibility that you have been hypnotized before. Do you remember any time that you have been involved in an activity where it seemed like you weren’t even blinking? Like in the really intense part of a horror movie? Well there you go, you have been hypnotized before.
Many times, we don’t realize our intense focus until someone waves their hand in front of our face and we hop to in recognition of the world around us. We have all experienced this; therefore it is a prime example of an every day, normally experienced hypnotic state. This state of focus can in many ways reduce the stress and tension within ones body, much like a good neck massage, and put us in the state of total relaxation. As stress hormones are reduced, our anxiety level is also reduced, and to use the massage example again, it is much like the release of lactic acid from sore muscles. Once the acid is released, the muscles are not a sore. The same goes for the body and the release of stress.
Contrary to popular science fiction stories, self hypnosis won’t transport you into another dimension or make you act like a chicken. It’s all under your control, and you can use it to alleviate stress and reduce your anxiety, whether at home or in the office.
To start this exercise, you have to identify the initial problem. What specific thing made you anxious or worried? If you’re able to figure that out, you can focus on it to figure out why you’re so stressed. All you’ll need other than that is a quiet place with a comfortable chair or bed. You’ll want to relax your body as much as possible, so sitting or lying down is preferred.
After you’re comfortable, focus on the calming aspects of your life. Dimming or turning off lights can help reduce the environmental input, and you can focus more on yourself. Keep a tranquil state of thought and start deep breathing. Rid your mind of negative images or to-do lists and relax into self hypnosis.
