Being pregnant should be a thrilling and exciting time in a woman’s life. With everything going on from baby showers, to picking the name, to decorating the new baby’s room, it seems like there is so much to do. It is certainly a hectic but joyful time in life. But many women may start to feel intense back pain as their pregnancy nears the later months.
This doesn’t just make it more difficult to do the basic daily tasks you need to do, but it can even hurt your quality of life and make your pregnancy something that is less joyful and cherished than it is supposed to be.
Of course you can figure out that the back pain is being caused by all the weight you’re gaining during your pregnancy. As your stomach starts to protrude, it can start to pull you forward and throw off your balance. You then instinctively lean your upper body backward more to keep your balance better. This position only accentuates the arch in your back and can really do a number on your lower back and your hips.
That might make sense, but there is more to back pain during pregnancy. Imbalanced muscles will result in back pain not just with pregnant women, but in most people in our society today as well.
The overall condition and strength of your muscles is incredibly important when it comes to keeping your back strong and healthy. Normally your muscles should work evenly and with equal force when you move an arm or leg, for example. As one muscle gets tighter, another will stretch and open up. Both of these muscles should respond equally. Otherwise, you have muscle imbalances.
As a pregnant woman, your growing belly will require that every move you make from walking (or waddling), sitting, sleeping, or bending over be adjusted and your muscles will need to shift to accommodate. You might already have muscle imbalances, but they will only be made worse by your pregnancy.
These imbalances will pull your back further out of alignment and place even more stress on your bones and joints. Your back consists of 24 different vertebrae. Normally your spine and your hips are aligned to carry the weight of your body evenly. Your muscles will need to take up the burden if even one of the vertebrae is out of place and they will need to carry all the extra weight. If this happens you’ll be much more likely to have back problems and you’ll be more likely to suffer a back injury.
So, if this is what you’re going through, now you have to endure a painful pregnancy. It is sad that for many women with back pain their pregnancy becomes something so painful that it takes away from the joy and happiness that they normally feel.
