How To Deal With Being Shy

If you’re shy, you know how difficult it can be to go into a social gathering alone. You would probably do whatever it takes to get over being shy. It can be scary to walk into a room full of little known individuals.

You try to speak and the words don’t come out of your mouth in the order you think, and even sometimes, you decide to to turn around and leave because the anxiety of the awkward situation has you clammy and nervous. Those are feelings of being shy.

But where do those feelings of outlook come from? And some ask how to get over shyness. Let’s begin to address these two topics about the shyness:

Many doctors and psychologists believe that being shy isn’t a matter of being an introvert or extrovert because the shyness isn’t a personality trait, rather a coping mechanism.

They believe that the shyness that we all put up with comes from a learned answer that happened when we were young, to groom us into being shy in certain circumstances.

This reaction comes from that irrational or angry reaction we got from an adult when we were younger. Or from being ignored as an adolescent simply because someone didn’t notice that we were talking, or because we hadn’t raised our voice enough. Or from being “shot down” when we did have the guts to stick up for ourselves.

We can group these reasons into 3 main categories:

– Seeing yourself as overly negative.

– You pay too much attention in certain situations. Relax.

– Keep all the negative thoughts from a situation to a minimum. Nobody else is thinking about them. If you really want to stop being shy, the first step is to not worry so much about yourself, but pay more attention to the people around you.

When you have other interests besides yourself, you will focus less on “if you’re making any mistakes” and you can focus your energy on helping others feel more comfortable.

Another way to get over being shy is to think about your positive qualities. Don’t let the negatives get you down. Instead, think of a time when you were really happy and comfortable and make it happen.

If your shy, you know this isn’t something to take lightly. Many people have gotten over their shyness, and you can too! Start making changes now so in the future you can share your personality with others!
