Are you getting enough sleep? If you are like most people, your answer will be no. Unfortunately, sleep deprivation is robbing our society of good health. And maybe it’s robbing you of good health.
To make matters worse, in extreme cases, many people live their lives in constant lethargy as a result of misdiagnosed sleeping disorders. Are you sleeping well every night?
So, without further delay, here are 5 tips for fighting off insomnia:
1. Decrease temperature and light: Your body needs darkness and cold temperatures to optimize the production of melatonin. And recall that melatonin is essential for proper sleeping. In fact, many people with sleeping disturbances do not produce melatonin.
2. Keep artificial light at bay: Not only will light decrease melatonin production, but it can also phase advance your internal biological clock-not a good thing if you are trying to sleep on a regular schedule. Thus, make sure you minimize any use of light-producing electronics in the one hour before bed time.
3. Generate white noise: White noise is a great way to keep all the wake up noises outside of your bedroom. You could get a fan or a sound conditioner which is basically a machine that produces white noise. Doing this will ensure that not even the chirping crickets wake you up.
4. Don’t wrap yourself up like a mummy: When you first fall asleep you may not feel hot. However, as the night progresses and heat collects, you may begin to sweat. And recall that high temperatures make you more awake. Not good if you really want to sleep well.
5. Don’t wake up late on the weekends: Your internal biological clock is sensitive during the week and during weekends. Thus, every time you sleep in on the weekend, you are sending mixed signals to your biological clock. Thus, it behooves you to wake up and fall asleep at the same time all the time.
Getting a good night’s sleep is vital for your health. Anything less and you are at risk for gaining weight and for developing cardiovascular disease. So make sure you follow these tips today, don’t delay!
