A sleepy nervous system will make it very hard for you to exercise at the highest level possible. And if you can’t exercise hard, you will not be able to burn a lot of calories.
The bad news is that most people do not know how to prime their nervous system.
So here is how to make sure your body and nervous system are awake when you exercise:
1. Get your core temperature up: Just a little bit, though. If you increase it too much you will not be able to exercise for very long. After all, too much heat will make you reach a wall a lot sooner. On the other hand, a moderate warm up will increase you muscle’s ability to produce force.
2. Don’t exercise when you are tired: A sleep debt or an irregular sleep and wake cycle will leave your nervous system in a perpetual state of sluggishness. Your body will perform best when it is exercising with a full night’s sleep.
3. Warm up the muscles you will be using: Use specific and dynamic movements to warm up the muscles you will be using. This will make it much easier for your body to increase the electrical signals from your brain to your muscles.
4. Use caffeine to your advantage: Caffeine is a great stimulant for getting your body ready for action. You see, caffeine will wake your body up by increasing stress hormone concentration. More stress hormones translates into more alertness.
5. Make sure you have your own music: Don’t rely on your gym to play music you like. If you do this you will be disappointed more often than not. Instead, bring your own music so that you can exercise at the highest level possible.
6. Exercise earlier in the day: The best time is a couple hours after you wake up. You see, during this time you have already digested breakfast, your spine is aligned and your nervous system is awake. This is the optimal schedule for exercise.
