The death of a loved one is something that all of us dread to happen and when it does occur dealing with it can literally be the hardest thing we have to do. This is talking as adults but have you ever stopped and given a thought to how much more overwhelming it must be to a child? Here are a couple of pointers that will help you explain the loss to your youngsters:
The first thing you need to realize is that this may or is the first time they are facing anything of this sort. You will therefore have to give them a gentle yet honest breakdown of what exactly is going on. Being gentle does not mean you deviate and tell them their loved one is just sleeping for a very long time. They will wait for a long time for their time to wake up!
Telling them that their loved one has been taken up by God to live in his palace is not the way to go about it either. This may only foster strong resentment towards this almighty being who is selfish and takes our loved ones without thinking of the rest of us. Come out in a gentle manner and tell them what has happened.
This on the other hand does not mean that you explain all you know from a to z about how and why death occurs. This may become too much for their little brains and emotions to equate thus ending up overwhelming them.
The next thing you need to do is to try and make sure that the routines that they are so used to are not suddenly ceased just because of the death. Do all that you can to make sure that it remains somewhat the same as it was even though it really isn’t.
Do not let them have to conceal their emotions if they want to let them out. If they want to wail and cry let them do it and in fact encourage it.
When it comes to those times of the year like anniversaries or any occasion that would strongly bring back the emotions they had for their loved one, make sure that you are there for them and not away busy with something else.
There is no set time in which this kind of grief heals so let them deal with it at their own pace.
