Ever heard of the ‘freshmen fifteen?’ This phrase refers to the extra weight gained during many college student’s first year away from home. Many of us eat far more junk food during our first year at college than ever before.
Food choices are important and play a large role in our body’s natural defense against illness. When a flu bug hits campus, you’ll want to have a strong immune system.
Simply avoiding or reducing junk food is not enough. It’s very important to consume the required amounts of proteins, carbs, minerals, and vitamins to keep the body healthy.
Many students know that vitamins and minerals are very important in building a defense against many illnesses. But vitamin pills and other supplements may not be enough. It is much better to get our vitamins and supplements from the foods we eat.
Try including dairy each day for the Vitamin A and calcium, and enjoy some citric fruits for the Vitamin C. Don’t forget the leafy green vegetables, which pack plenty of Vitamin E. Your body relies on these vitamins, and will thank you later.
When eating at the college cafeteria, try walking past the entrees and go to the salad bar. You’ll find lots of fresh vegetables, perhaps some you’ve never even tried before. Now try walking past the soda machine and go to the juice machine instead.
Most college cafeterias will have cereals out at each meal, as well as fresh fruit. Try cereal and fruit for lunch some time instead of that heavy entre. You may just find it easier to stay awake in your afternoon classes.
Eating a healthy diet is not just about what you don’t eat. What you do eat is actually more important, as you will need the right vitamins and nutrients to stay healthy, and the best way to consume vitamins and minerals is through the foods we eat. This will help you to stay awake and avoid catching the next round of illness that comes through campus.
