We are a culture of social eaters. After all, it’s virtually impossible to have a normal social life if you don’t eat out.
So here are some rapid-fire tips so that fine dining doesn’t destroy your weight loss efforts:
1. Don’t go for the high fat cuts of meat: Things like ribs, fatty steaks, hot dogs and sausages have extremely high levels of saturated fat. And saturated fat not only has lots of calories, but it blocks the absorption of carbohydrates in your muscles and clogs your arteries.
2. Deep frying: Anything that is deep fried is likely to come with heat-morphed oils. In other words, subjecting oils to such high heats makes them rancid and extremely unhealthy. In fact, some of these heated oils can become worse than trans fats.
3. Don’t overdo the toppings: Sometimes is the small things that can really add up. If you get a healthy salad and load it with endless amounts of toppings, you are creating a situation in which the salad becomes a caloric powerhouse.
4. Flush out the sodium: Most restaurant food is going to be loaded with sodium, and while sodium doesn’t make you gain fat, it does make you gain weight in the form of water retention. Paradoxically, drinking more water helps you clear out the excess sodium.
5. Don’t eat bread: Especially if it comes in a basket because this will wreak havoc on your body. Instead, ask for the bread to not be brought out. But if you absolutely have to have a piece, make it small. Even better, have a salad with it.
6. Make half your meal to go: And don’t wait until you have finished eating to do this. Instead, make half of it to go right when it arrives. This will prevent you from having an entire days worth of calories in one sitting. And trust me here, I’ve seen meals with an entire days worth of caloric content.
You don’t have to become a dieting hermit when trying to lose weight. But you shouldn’t have to become a buffet bandit either. Stick to the above tips and you will do just fine!
