If you suffer from knee pain, getting in shape will seem like pushing a giant boulder up a steep hill. Unfortunately, knee pain is becoming more and more common because of the lifestyle most people lead.
So here are some tips for preventing knee pain when losing weight:
1. Don’t let your hamstrings become rigid: It’s critical that your hamstrings remain flexible for optimal health here. If you let them stay chronically tight, they can cause knee pain. And prevention here is far better than curing the tightness once knee pain sets in.
2. Strengthen your quadriceps: Your patella is fastened in place by your quadriceps muscles. Thus, having strong quadriceps translates into more stable and pain free knees. One great way to strengthen your quads is by doing leg extensions.
3. Get in better shape: I know this is a circular argument, but the more fat you lose, the less stress your knees will be subjected to. So make sure you keep this in mind as motivation to keep on pushing forward even when things seem bleak and motivation begins to fade.
4. Stretch your quadriceps: Tight quadriceps can also cause knee pain. I work from the standing position and have tight quadriceps as a result. So if you use your lower body often, quad stretching becomes more relevant.
5. Have some very light exercise days in your routine: If you do this, you will add on an additional layer of protection for your joints. You see, joints breakdown and then rebuild just like your muscle fibers. So give them some rest every now and again.
6. Try to exercise in the water: This removes a huge amount of stress from your joints. And less stress on your joints will keep them healthy. Even better, with this approach you remove stress from your joints while increasing caloric burn.
A bad knee can completely ruin your efforts to get in shape. So make sure you take action on this advice sooner than later. Because if you wait too long, you are likely to forget the advice!
