How To Turn Into A Runner

Most people are aware than running is a great way to get some exercise and dramatically improve your cardiovascular health. Very few people that run on a regular basis are overweight, or have any kinds of health problems. However, running can seem a bit intimidating to some people, especially if you haven’t worked out in a while. In this article, you’ll learn why running is something that everybody can do, and how to easily get started.

To get started, it’s important to get your body used to being up and active for a certain amount of time. The best way to do this, especially if you haven’t exercised in a while, is to simply walk. Start off on short walks of ten minutes or so. Slowly increase your time until you are walking twenty or thirty minutes without any strain or stress. Then you’ll be ready to move on to the next step.

Now that you’ve increased your ability to walk for a while, it’s time to mix in some slow jogging. Nothing too drastic at first. Walk for ten minutes, jog for a couple. Walk for five minutes, jog for a couple. Just keep mixing in some jogging with your regular walking. The goal here is to jog more and more of the time you are out and about. Keep it slow, and don’t push yourself.

The next level is to simply jog one hundred percent of the time. Of course, you’ll probably need to decrease your distance, but that’s OK. Make it easy on yourself. Shoot for ten minutes. When that gets easy, increase it to twenty. Once you hit twenty minutes, then you can start to increase your speed a little bit. Once your comfortable with twenty minutes, increase it to thirty.

When you’ve reached thirty minutes of jogging without stopping, you’re ready to start setting some goals. If you can, check your mileage, and get an idea of how many minutes it takes for each mile. Start to either increase your distance in thirty minutes, or do the same distance in less time. Once you can run a mile in under ten minutes, then you’re ready to start entering in 5 and 10K runs in your neighborhood. These are fantastic events that really get you motivated. If you can run a 5K in under thirty minutes, or a 10K in under an hour, then you’ve accomplished something very few people can do.

Running is a great activity that anybody can do so long as you ease yourself into it. Take your time, go slow, and before long you’ll be collecting T-shirts from community running events. Have fun.
