The long winter, with its damp and chill, really does a number on skin. We bundle up against the cold, and we end up with dry, dull, tired skin after months of this. In winter, no one can tell because we are covered up. But in spring and summer our skin comes out from hiding. With spring right around the corner, it is time to get skin back into shape!
Focus your efforts first on the legs. The legs are on nearly constant display in hotter weather, because of shorts and summer dresses and skirts. Getting legs summer shorts-ready can take time so start early and follow the tips below.
Skin should be made both healthy and more attractive. Since you probably haven’t been getting any sun over the winter months, one way to make a major difference is to help your skin look tanner. Hitting the beach or the tanning salon is not the best idea, though, because these rays can damage the skin.
Instead, consider self-tanner or bronzer. Don’t buy it and apply it right off, though, or you’ll find yourself with a streaky, spotty result. Your winter skin probably has dead flaky or dry skin, which will cause your self-tanner to take unevenly. Exfoliate first, and get all of the dead skin off of the legs. Then use the self-tanner. Finish up with moisturizer, after the self-tanner has had time to soak in and is dry to the touch.
Your legs should also be toned. Start an exercise regime. It does not have to be complex. Here are a couple of easy exercises that can make a big difference:
-Calf raises: You’ll need to stand on something that allows you to have your heels hanging off of the back, like an aerobic step bench or a stair. Stand with the balls of your feet on the stair and your heels not in contact with the surface. Raise up on tiptoe and then lower back down over and over. Your calves should burn while you are doing this, this indicates you are toning the muscle.
– Jumping rope: Few exercises are more effective faster than jumping rope. If you do 30 minutes of jumping per day, you’ll tone your legs, get a great cardio workout and improve overall health. Plus, you only need a minimum of equipment, and no special training to get started!
