With all the attention devoted to DHA supplements, these days, you would think that there’s nothing new going on. But that is just not true. Naturally, you’ve heard of fish-oil. It’s a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA and EPA. Are you aware, however, that krill are also a source of omega-3 fatty acids in oil?
Krill are small shrimp-like creatures that reside in the ocean. They’re an important food source for many kinds of fishes, mammals, and birds, including whales, seals, and penguins. Because krill feed on the same food sources that fish do, their bodies collect oil that’s high in omega-3 fatty acids, just as tuna together with other cold water fishes do.
Krill oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, such as the specific acids of DHA and EPA as fish-oil does. The concentration is somewhat less in krill oil than in fish oil. Krill oil hasn’t specifically been researched as much as fish oil, but it generally seems to be actually better. It appears as if your system actually absorbs krill oil faster than fish-oil.
Just as omega-3 fatty acids generally, and fish oils in particular, it also looks like krill oil can help patients with a many types of diseases and medical disorders. Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, appears to be helped with krill oil. It also appears to lower triglycerides and blood cholesterol levels maybe even better than fish oil. Just as fish-oil generally seems to help diabetics, krill oil has been shown to lower blood glucose levels. So, there’s a host of ailments and diseases that krill oil appears to help. Pregnant women and women who’re nursing also are taking krill oil because research has shown that DHA supplements can help improve the development of children’s brains.
There isn’t any recommended dosages for krill oil, because it’s really too new. Most people stay with the same recommended dosages for fish oils of 1 to 3 grams per day. You can buy krill oil from a many types of places both on and off-line. It is made in capsules just like fish-oil. You’ll want to keep it far from sunlight and humidity, just as you should with your fish-oil capsules. As in everything, you should talk to your doctor before you take krill oil, or any supplement. As more and more scientists study krill oil, even more of it’s healing properties will be made know. Until then, DHA supplements of any form are certainly something you need to contemplate for better health.
