Is Poor Posture Ruining Your Workouts?

A body that is out of alignment is a body that cant exercise efficiently. And if you aren’t exercising efficiently you can’t push yourself as hard as possible.

Even worse, inefficient movement patterns can accelerate the degeneration of your joints.

So here is how to improve your posture for better workouts:

1. Keep the front of your upper body loose: Sitting at a desk all day will make your chest and front shoulders excessively tight. And this in turn will put excess load on your lower back and will reduce the amount of space through which your rotator cuff tendons can move in.

2. Keep the back of your upper body strong: This will compliment keeping the front of your upper body loose. You see, as your chest and shoulders become tight, your upper back is likely to become long and weak. So make sure you strengthen this area.

3. Don’t sit down all day: Doing this will accelerate the degeneration of your posture via many different mechanisms. Not only will your shoulder begin to slouch forward, but the discs in your lower back will also degenerate at a faster rate.

4. Buy a solid ergonomic chair: A good ergonomic chair will ensure that your body remains aligned the way it’s supposed to be. And although they are expensive, they are worth every penny. After all, you can’t buy a new lower back once it degenerates.

5. Use myofascial release: Static stretching isn’t a waste of time, but there are much more effective modalities out there that will correct faulty movement patterns. Myofascial release is one modality that can accomplish this.

6. See a physical therapist: Physical therapists go through rigorous training to correct muscle imbalances. And if you can’t fix the issues on your own a physical therapist is a very good option here. Even better, they have many treatments that will further accelerate healing.

Exercising consistently with poor posture is a recipe for disaster. So take action on this advice today, even if you don’t have any pain yet!
