If you are under pressure and stress for a long period of time, you might develop physical problems as a consequence of it. This type of illness is usually known as long-term stress or chronic stress, which is a different kind of stress than short-term stress.
Chronic stress can trigger a number of physical problems. Your blood pressure, for example, rises when you are under stress. If the condition is not tended to and repaired, it can lead to hypertension and to heart disease.
At the same time, blood is diverted from the digestive system to other functions. This process can lead to digestive problems, constipation, diarrhea and IBS (Irritated bowel syndrome).
Stress can cause illness in three main ways – one of them is to lower and damage the immune system. So, any illness one develops will likely be more serious and harder to recover from. The body loses its ability to fend off common viruses such as colds and flu, and it might not be able to respond appropriately to more severe illnesses.
If you think that your illness is due to chronic stress, you might need to take steps to treat both before you can see any results.
First of all, you should determine what causes your stress. This is not always easy because it may be something that you have accepted as ‘just part of life’. Your stress could simply be work related and triggered by noise, unpleasant co-workers, a boss impossible to work for, or even work conditions that are less than acceptable. Your level of stress could be also the result of things happening at home, such as fights with your spouse, children or other family members, loneliness, or even the mere fact that you don’t handle anxiety as well as the next guy.
All the scenarios discussed above can lead to stress, but bear in mind there could be many other causes. There could be a number of things going on in your life that cause you stress. So, the best thing to do would be to figure out what is stressing you, and then try to determine what you can do to eliminate those factors.
This is often the hardest step. When one is under stress, feeling helpless is very common. Solutions are sometimes seen as an ulterior source of stress. Things such as dealing with a problem teenager, looking for a new job, and even boosting social life might be seen as more things to do and new challenges to stress upon.
It would be good for you to just sit down and try to think of possible solutions, as many as you can, even if they sound off the wall. Just accepting that you have options can help to deal with the stress. Some of them might lead to you thinking of other possibilities that you had not considered, and you may end up with a real, workable solution.
And, if ultimately you come to the realization that your problem has no possible solutions, you might have to learn how to deal with it differently. Accept it, let go of it, perhaps even try to enjoy it. Be aware of all the times when it causes you stress, acknowledge them and take steps to relax. This way you can deal with the situation each time it arises and avoid the kind of chronic stress that leads to stress related illness.
