My hometown and favorite city in the world is Kansas City. And recently Kansas City was ranked the sixth worst overweight city in the United States. There needs to be a big weight loss in Kansas City. And the same can be said for almost any other city.
The life style of people in Kansas City does not result in a healthy life style. Kansas City, like many of other cities, is spread over many square miles, and thus we are not able to do a lot of practical walking. Our work schedules tend to keep us too busy for a healthy life style. And our choices of food are more geared toward taste, rather than taste and nutrition.
The shape of our cities changed in the early fifties. Moving to the suburbs was made possible by the many new cars and streets. Now we drove our cars to work, rather than walk to work. The new weekly driving trip to the super grocery store replaced the daily walk to the market for food. People still enjoy living in the suburbs, so this life style will not change. Daily exercise now has to be planned and worked into our schedule.
Most manual labor is now done by machines and our activity at work has gotten a lot less physical. This has of course been for the best, except for the activity we now miss at work. Physical work all day required a breakfast and lunch to be eaten. Today we snack on the way to work and maybe skip lunch. Eating the recommended three healthy meals a day now takes careful planning.
We control what we put into our mouths. The fast food is deep fried, donuts are loaded with sugar and processed foods are loaded with sodium. Steaks and bar-b-queue are two of the most popular foods in Kansas City. A planned healthy life style will still have room for the occasional steak or slab of ribs.
Often times our health suffers because of life changes. When this happens we have to do careful planning to keep ourselves healthy.
