Have you got less active as you’ve grown older? How old do you feel, maybe even older than you actually are? If this is true, don’t worry, you’re not alone. This is a common occurrence, particularly for people with a sedentary job.
Sitting on a comfortable chair or behind an office table for the most part of the day means a very minimal use of your body. The “use it or lose it” principle can easily apply to this situation.
We all know that this type of inactivity can be the cause of serious physical problems. It may make your life shorter. What can you do about it? It’s easy. You have to get more active.
You could go to the gym and lift weights regularly. Or you could do a similar exercise regime in your own house for far less money than joining a gym.
The problem is that often we cannot fit this in. Don’t give up, if you sit at a desk all day, you could flex your leg muscles for half an hour. Similarly, instead of using the car to drive to work you could bicycle.
Also, if you don’t live too far out of town, you could go out to pick up food instead of having it delivered. Just leaving the house means you will do more exercise than if you had just picked up the phone.
Taking up a sport or hobby is another great idea, particularly with people close to you. Maybe you could go hiking or start doing yoga. Maybe join the local soccer team.
In warm months or if you have access to indoor facilities, you might even take up swimming. The idea here is that any movement is better than none and you can gradually become more active over time, possibly even adding years to your life.
