If you watch any of the television shows featuring overweight people competing to lose weight, you may well believe that weight loss requires an intense exercise regime that is nigh impossible to maintain. The people competing in these shows have the time to exercise as much as they are told to, the commitment to push themselves – particularly as people are watching them on TV – and the show’s producers know that pushing contestants to the limit is more interesting to viewers.
If you want to lose weight, you don’t have to go through the stress and strain that the contestants on these ‘game’ shows face. You can develop simple, low impact exercise routines that can slowly and healthfully ease you back into shape.
Try Walking
One of the healthiest ways to get your body in shape is to take a walk. Walking invigorates every muscle in your body. They only thing that you need is a good pair of sneakers. You don’t need to spend a fortune. Choose the style that fits well and cushions your feet.
When the weather is good, grab a friend or neighbor – or even one of the kids – and head out for a walk. The local park or nearest beach will be nice, but even a stroll around the neighborhood will do. Taking someone to talk to keeps you from counting the yards, making the time and distance go much quicker. The mall can be used for a walk in less than agreeable weather – not for shopping, but to walk through. Take in some steps while you’re there.

Yoga is a lot more intense than it looks. All that bending and strecthing really works your body, albeit in a low impact way. As you get more advanced, the workouts can become quite intense. Join a class, or buy a DVD to practice at home.
Be Mindful of Your Food Intake
Although you are now starting to exercise, this does not give you carte blanche to eat whenever you feel like it. Maintain healthy eating habits, stick to three meals and two snacks a day, and keep track of your food intake. You can still have a treat every now and then, but keep it to one cookie, not the whole bag.
