Losing Weight – Is It Better To Have The Odd Day Off

The subject of whether or not to take days off when losing weight is one that is quite controversial. My take on this issue is detailed below but of course, you can make up your own mind. Having a day free from exercise and watching what you eat is what is meant by taking a ‘day off’ from your diet.

In my opinion, these days are not a great idea and the following are the reasons for this.

I feel that you will only ever get short term results when you go on a faddy diet so I don’t agree with them. If you really want your weight loss to be a permanent thing then you will have to make lifestyle changes that you can permanently adopt. That will mean that there will be no need to take days off because these changes will become part of our daily life. If you think about ‘days off’ it means that we are giving ourselves a day free from doing something that we don’t really like because in actual fact we are depriving ourselves of something. But by doing this, you are just strengthening your assumption that you have to punish yourself in order to lose weight and this is something that will be almost impossible to maintain. But changing your lifestyle is a preferable idea because it is not about being punished but rather adopting changes which are better for you.

I’m not saying here that we shouldn’t reward ourselves for reaching our weight loss goals we most certainly should. But in my opinion a reward should not be something that we have been trying to stop doing, ie it is not a good idea to reward yourself for not eating chocolate by having a chocolate bar. Rewarding an alcoholic for abstaining from alcohol with a bottle of beer would be unheard of so why do the same thing when you lose weight.

Instead you could take a trip out to the shops and buy yourself some new clothes to suit your new body – this would not be bad for your health and will still make you feel better.
