Vertical sleeve gastrectomy is a new type of bariatric weight loss surgery. This surgery was preformed the first time using the Spider Surgical System, which uses a single incision though the belly button.
More sophisticated and less invasive weight loss surgery procedures are becoming available for morbidly obese people. The newest development in bariatric surgery is the Spider system. This system allows doctors to make minimal dime size incisions using several instruments during the bariatric operation.
Some of the advantages of having minimally invasive surgical procedures include shorter recovery periods, less scarring, post-operative pain and discomfort.
After receiving FDA approval, the Spider Surgical System was being used in hospitals in March 2010, and is being hailed as a pioneer in the search for minimally invasive surgical techniques. It also has the potential to cause significant changes in the treatment of patients who need operations in a variety of specialty areas.
The Spider Surgical System is made by TransEnterix Inc. of Durham, North Carolina. The company is committed to giving the medical world more than a new surgical tool, and is actively involved in developing a groundbreaking area of surgery known as Flexible Laparoscopy.
A press release posted on the company website says:
* “Surgeons insert the SPIDER Surgical System through a single incision located within the patient’s belly button. The system opens up umbrella-like within the abdomen, providing the surgeon with two flexible channels for right- and left-hand instruments with 360-degree range of motion, and two rigid channels for small cameras and other instruments. Once the procedure is completed, the SPIDER Surgical System closes up and is removed through the same incision.”
The Spider system has been used for different types of bariatric surgerys such as the laparoscopic adjustable band and the vertical sleeve gastrectomy. This system has also been used for procedures to remove kidneys, gall bladder and colon operations.
The Spider Surgical System was hailed as one of the “Innovations of the Year” in 2009 by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.
