Ordering an Electric Powered Bike – What you need to be aware of

Electric bikes are becoming more popular as a mode of transport and so the number available in the market is increasing. However, the greater the choice the more you need to know about them before making the all-important purchase. Many of the bikes look the same and have very similar specifications but that does not mean the performance will be similar. There are a number of things to consider when buying an electric bike.

Price: There is a surprising range in cost of electric bikes, from those under ?200 to those over ?3000. With cost comes improved technologies and performances. That should not deter you from looking at the cheaper models – they may meet all your requirements. Cost should be borne in mind along with other specifications.

Type of Bike: What are you going to be using your bike for? There are four basic types of bike; choose the one most appropriate for your needs. A Cruiser is good for quick trips over short distances. A mountain bike is for those that will be riding off-road. A Road bike will provide speed, not necessarily comfort for those riding on the road. The Hybrid bike, also the most popular, is a combination of the mountain and road bikes and combines speed with comfort.

Weight: The heaviest parts of the bike are the frame, battery and motor. The more expensive bikes will combine a lightweight frame, battery and motor without sacrificing power and performance. The cheaper bikes may be lightweight a lighter battery may have reduced power.

Motor: The hub motor will be found in most modern electric bikes. Its position provides a low centre of gravity which provides for an easier balancing act. A motor with integrated gearing will provide the bike with more turning power (torque) and efficiency. A brushless motor has few moving parts and therefore a longer life span than a brushed motor.

Power: What type of journeys are you going to be making in between charging your bike? Short, flat journeys will require little power whilst a long journey with plenty of hill climbs is going to require considerably more. Beware of the power output on the cheaper models with small motors; buy according to your needs.

With these ideas in mind you should be able to make an informed decision when choosing your electric bike. Whilst the bikes at the dearer end of the range should have improved performance and a lighter frame, the cheaper models may be adequate for you.
