Laparoscopic band surgery is a safer, less invasive substitute for gastric bypass operation. Laparoscopic surgical treatments are also known as “key hole surgery” where two tiny incisions are made instead of a long cut made by a scalpel. Using a small tube and microscopes, very small surgical instruments are introduced through the incisions in the body to execute various kinds of surgical procedure. Adjustable banding of the stomach results in a little pouch at the top of the stomach, anywhere from 15-50 ml. This slows down the motion of the food to the lower portion of the stomach, permitting the patient to feel full and satisfied on a smaller percentage of food. From the band itself extends a tubing which is attached to a port that lies just beneath the surface of the skin. This is useful for modifications made following surgery, with the addition of or removing saline depending on a person’s unique requirements.
