Post-nasal Drip – An Expert’s Advice

Using natural treatments the symptoms of post-nasal drip and rhinitis can be greatly relieved.

Post-nasal drip is normally due to rhinitis. Mucus gathers at the back of the throat and nasal passages and drips down the back of the throat leading to a sore throat and cough (which can be chronic). Post-nasal drip is usually the result of excessive mucus production, the prevention of proper sinus drainage and thicker than normal mucus.

The following can increase thin mucus secretions;- sinus allergies, viruses such as the common cold, spicy food, certain types of food, hormone changes, the side effects of drugs, deviated nasal septum and other structural abnormalities, vasomotor rhinitis, cold temperatures.

The following may cause secretions to thicken;- pollutants and irritants, structural abnormalities, hormonal irregularities, drug side effects, reduced humidity levels, bacterial and fungal infections, old age. This thickened mucus can give the impression that nasal secretions have increased when in actual fact they have not.

In order to reduce the symptoms of post-nasal drip and rhinitis significantly these natural remedies can be used.

Avoid allergens and irritants – Whenever possible avoid allergens and irritants and minimise your exposure to them. For example avoid areas with a high pollen content and choose hardwood flooring instead of carpets.

Natural nasal sprays – SinuSoothe in particular is doctor recommended and contains natural ingredients which relieve inflammation, nasal congestion, sinus pain, headaches, removes airborne irritants etc. SinuSoothe is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and therefore kills any infection present. In addition it contains natural anti-histamines that relieve a runny, itchy nose and sneezing etc. and desensitizes the nasal passages to allergens. It also thins the mucus due to it’s decongestant and expectorant properties. SinuSoothe can be used long term, is non – addictive and has no side effects. It provides not only a ‘quick fix’ but also a long term solution for sinusitis sufferers.

Saline nasal sprays – Nasal sprays containing saline solution (isotonic or hypertonic) can be used to relieve a blocked nose and flush out allergens.

Nasal irrigation – A neti pot is used to irrigate the sinuses with either an isotonic or hypertonic solution. An isotonic solution has the same salt concentration as your body. A hypertonic solution has a higher salt content and may be more useful at drawing moisture and mucous from the sinuses. This may help reduce inflammation and relieve nasal congestion. It is a good practice for keeping your sinuses clean and removing irritants. It is completely safe provided you use the correct saline solution.

Anti-histamines (natural) – To avoid the side effects of otc anti-histamines natural ones such as butterbur are extremely effective at reducing the allergy response. There are others and many have been clinically proven to be effective.

Improve immune function – Improving immune function by supplementing a healthy diet with vitamins and minerals improves the allergy response mechanism and ability to fight viral and bacterial infections. Vitamin C, B complex, garlic and zinc are all excellent.

Natural anti-inflammatories- Since the symptoms of chronic sinusitis are caused by inflammation it follows that by reducing inflammation you will reduce the severity of the symptoms. Omega 3,6 &9 oils, vitamin C, turmeric and ginger are all excellent natural anti-inflammatories. There are plenty of others and your local health food store should be able to advise you on these. It usually takes about 4 weeks for these to start taking effect.

Nasal barrier gels – These can be applied to the inside of the nostrils to cach pollen.

As with all medical conditions you should consult your doctor before undertaking new treatments.
