Pregnancy Often Brings Sleep Challenges

A woman’s body undergoes many incredible changes when she becomes pregnant and some of those are unexpected at first. Many women are surprised to learn of the many different and uncomfortable side-effects of going through pregnancy. Many people joke about not getting sleep after the baby is born, but being pregnant brings its own host of sleeping issues. Obviously women expect to be uncomfortable by trying to sleep with a growing belly, but there can be many other unexpected nighttime issues.

Charley Horses: Changes in vitamin intake, dehydration and the quick weight gain of becoming pregnant can often be reasons for cramping leg muscles during the night. Many women suffer from unexpected bedtime leg cramps. There are many preventative measures for muscle spasms, but be sure to ask your doctor before using them. Leg muscle cramps may strike at any time during the pregnancy, but they are most commonly experienced in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.

Heartburn issues: It is no surprise that many women should have issues with digestion during pregnancy. The stomach and other bodily organs are being pressed together to make room for the expanding baby and that tightness commonly impacts the digestive organs the most. Pregnant women can not always be able to avoid heartburn and constipation problems because some drugs designed to relieve these symptoms are not safe for pregnant women.

Unexpected urination problems: Some expecting women suffer through 1 or more random nocturnal bed wetting episodes during their pregnancy. Nearly all expecting women experience a growing need to urinate much more frequently than they are used to. Tightness against the urinary system and added pressure on the kidneys can cause some women to urinate four to six times each night.

Various sleep problems will come and go during the course of a pregnancy, and not all women suffer from the same sleep challenges. Expecting women should be ready for sleep issues by their doctors in advance. Many doctors advise expectant women to sleep with pillows around them for comfort and to lay on their left side to help avoid some of these sleep issues.
