Many of us tend to overeat, especially if we’re stressed, upset or just plain starving. But overeating and binge eating aren’t good for us. We consume more calories in one sitting, and continuing the habit will make it very hard for us to stop.
Controlling how we eat is a very tough thing to do, there are many people who struggle with it, but here are a few tips to help you stop from binge eating.
1. Stop Dieting – This is a trigger that causes people to overeat. If you restrict certain foods, it makes you want to eat those certain foods later on. Instead of focusing on how much you eat, focus on what you eat. If you tend to eat more junk than healthy food, try changing that up and eating more of a well balanced meal.
2. No Restrictions – Allow yourself to eat what you feel like. If you want chocolate, go and eat some. They key is to eat junk food in moderation. Why should you allow yourself to eat what you want? Restricting certain foods makes you think about the food you can’t eat. When you think about that food often, you feel like you really want to eat it, causing a round of binge eating. When you know you can eat what you want, you will be less likely to overate, as long as you are wise in deciding what and how much to eat.
3. Understand Your Emotions – Most people tend to overeat because that is their way of dealing with their emotions. If you feel the need to eat coming up, give yourself some time to reflect before you start eating. Figure out how you are feeling and what is making you feel that way. Understanding why you feel the way you do is a step to controlling your eating habits.
4. Consult a friend – Do you have a close personal friend? Then tell them about your problem. Good friends will not make you feel worse about yourself, and more often than not, they will be supportive and try to help you through your problems. Being able to talk to someone will also give you a chance to let your feelings out and get some insight on your problems.
These are some good tips on trying to overcome binge eating. Binge eating is an eating disorder so you will have to understand that healing from it will take time, so give yourself all the time you need and don’t be too hard on yourself.
Do not judge the progress you are making and celebrate the progress you have made. If you tend to binge 4 times a day, and manage to lessen it to 3, be proud that you are getting better and don’t be upset that you haven’t stopped the habit yet. This will take time, and taking baby steps is the surest way to overcome the disorder for life.
