Prospective Patients At Dental Clinic Must Pass Interview

A woman who had a huge smile and long black hair sat comfortably in the tiny waiting room of a dental clinic. Occupying the dental seat was an older woman whose teeth were being examined by a young dentist. Thanks to the low cost services of the clinic, she is able to get dental care which she otherwise couldn’t afford.

A private non profit organization made the dental clinic its project, and it has been in existence for 43 years already. The clinic provided a health clinic to serve pregnant women and infants in the organization’s building for many years. The clinic provides children with dental care as well. We have always been getting our funds through the private donations, and we received from one certain woman what she left us in her will. It came to our attention that many agencies already provided the same services as were offering when we checked again our services after our foundation ran out. The lack of money to continue the services led to the closing of the clinic.

Research led them to find out that dentistry was one need not being met for low income persons, and so they decided to rent out the main building and remodel the garage. To convert the former garage into a small dental office, the organization raised $10,000 in donations. The equipment for the office was already available since they had been donated earlier by dentists for the previous dental clinic.

Prospective patients must come to the clinic for an interview to determine if they are eligible for low cost care. The clinic avoids competing with other dentists, and will reject those who can afford private dental care. Using a sliding scale, the clinic determines who can avail of the clinic’s services and how much they would be charged. The fee scale is based on the number of family members and income.

If a family has an income of $1,000 or more and consists only of four members, then that family is not qualified for low cost treatment at the clinic. If that same family earns a monthly income of $800 to $1,000, the members are entitled to dental examination for $8. An examination fee of $5 is charged to a family that generates an income of less than $800 a month. A dental examination done by private Santa Fe dentists would cost from $15 to $20.

Patients may be in their 40’s or 50’s, and they show signs of not having had any dental care. Children dominate most of the clinic’s patients list. Early in the winter, clinic dentists treated many children who qualified for federally funded county special programs. Most or even all of the clinic fees were covered by one program.

Presently the clinic only makes weekly schedules for 20 patients, but dentists are still able to take in more. When a lot of patients did not show up at the times they were supposed to show up for their dental appointments, the secretary began to schedule appointments without giving specific times but still giving specific days. Patients who come on the day they are scheduled are seen by the dentist according to who came first. We instruct every person who comes in how to take good care of their teeth. Those patients who have never used toothbrushes and dental floss are provided these things by the clinic. When these patients come for their next scheduled appointment, they will have improved teeth.
