Tonsillitis is the swelling of the tonsils due to infection. Infection of the tonsils may be caused by bacteria or virus. Viral tonsillitis can be resolved on its own and tonsillitis caused by bacteria can be treated with antibiotics.

Contrary to what most people believed about avoiding cold foods when suffering from tonsillitis, cold beverages help in making tonsils numb, thus, lessening the pain. Lime juice mixed with hot water and salt also helps in easing the pain in the tonsils. Applying a paste of fig by boiling fig and grinding it then applying it externally on the throat minimizes the symptoms of tonsillitis. Taking a lot of water and doing activities that force the body to sweat a lot also helps in removing toxins from the body and the kidneys.
