Should You Use Colloidal Silver Nasal Sprays For Sinus Infections?

Many people are turning to colloidal silver nasal sprays to treat their sinus infections however are they everything they are cracked up to be?

Colloidal silver consists of minute particles of metallic (non-ionic) silver suspended in fluid. Some preparations use larger particles of silver suspended in a protein solution. These are usually called “silver protein” or “colloidal silver protein. Colloidal silver can be taken orally. It can also be applied topically to the skin or in the form of eye drops or nasal sprays.

Throughout the years people have known about silvers anti-bacterial and ant-fungal properties. It was used to store water in a fresher state for longer (silver containers) and therefore it should be effective for bacterial and fungal sinus infections.

No one disputes the anti-bacterial effects of silver. Many commercial wound dressings contain silver salts. However colloidal silver taken internally has not been clinically proven to be effective and has no supporting medical literature. Having reviewed the scientific literature the US National center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) concluded there is no clinical support that colloidal silver is effective for any disease. The FDA also reiterates these claims.

Unfortunately there is a large variation in the silver content of different brands od colloidal silver which poses a potential risk to consumers. The FDA dispute claims it is safe and the NCCAM state that it can cause serious side effects.

Colloidal silver can cause; kidney damage, eye irritation, skin irritation, liver damage, fatigue, headaches etc. It also interferes with the absorption of certain antibiotics.

Long term use or the use of high doses of colloidal silver can cause argyria and argyrosis. Argyria is the permanent discoloration of the skin to a bluish-gray color. Argyrosis is when the eyes change color.

After studying reports of 70 cases of Argyria, the EPA established a chronic oral reference dose of 5 milligrams of silver per kg body weight per day. This is the dose at which there is a significant risk of developing argyria.
