Religion has been part of mankind for time immemorial. There are several customs and practices that some of these religions ascribe-to to stay pure before their Deity. There are some customs and practices that are common to most of these religions. Two of such practices are cleansing and fasting. Several religions believe that these two practices are vital to staying pure.
All the religions expect simplicity and purity which is granted through fasting and cleansing. Fasting is another custom being widely followed. Cleansing and fasting have the tendency to influence completely the way people act. Fasting is also another tool that religious people use. Religiously speaking, fasting means abstaining from food, sex, drink and sometimes sleep for a period of time. It is used to deny the fleshy “pleasures” of the world in honor of their God.
Fasting is also another tool that religious people use. Religiously speaking, fasting means abstaining from food, sex, drink and sometimes sleep for a period of time. It is used to deny the fleshy “pleasures” of the world in honor of their God. Religious people also use fasting to enhance their spirit and increase their depth in prayers. Prayer is the way religious people use to communicate with their Deity.
Though cleansing and fasting are used to achieve similar results of spiritual purification, they are not the same. There is a difference between fasting and cleansing of the body. While spiritual cleansing involve praying and meditating on all the wrong things that one has done to avoid repeating them, fasting may or may not include prayers.
During fasting, a person may decide not to pray but deprive his flesh of things that “pleases” it like food and entertainment. Though they both have the tendency to influence completely the way people act, cleaning must be done consciously well to achieve the required results while fasting needs determination from the person who is fasting to go through successfully.
It is interesting to also note that both these tools have their worldly use. Cleansing is used to remove “build up toxins” from the body while fasting is one of the tactics used by those who want to lose some weight.
However their use outside spirituality has been challenged with some even calling them dangerous. Some argue that abstaining from food to lose weight is dangerous to the health. On the issue of removing build up toxins from the body, critics argue that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that cleansing is effective.
