Taking Care Of Your Champion Tomato Plants

If you love growing tomatoes and are looking for a plant that will produce quickly and give you large tomatoes and lots of them, then you are going to want to start growing some champion tomato plants this summer. They will begin producing tomatoes after 60 to 65 days of planting and they produce 10 ounce sized tomatoes and each plant is able to produce up to 50 pounds of tomatoes during the summer months.

One of the first things you must do is find a very sunny spot in your garden for your plants. Tomatoes love lots of sun and flourish when they get it. They can survive in some partial sun but you won’t get as large of a plant nor will the tomatoes be as large as they would be under full sun conditions.

Once the area has been decided upon you will need to make sure that the area is completely rid of weeks, invading grass and of course rocks. Tomatoes don’t like a lot of rocks in their soil. You can then plant your tomatoes about 18 inches apart, make sure they aren’t any closer because this will cause them to compete for the sunshine. Also you can begin planting them in very late spring when you know there will be no more frost to endanger them.

Once you have them in the ground you are going to need to put a tomato or plant cage around each of your plants. You especially need this support for when the plants get larger and start bearing fruit. These can easily be found at any store that has a garden center.

Remember that your plants are going to require lots of water. So make sure that after you have finished watering every plant that you check the soil around them to make sure that the soil is completely wet. You should plan on checking your tomatoes probably at least three times if not more a week. You will need to check for weeds or grass that has intruded upon the area and remove it. This is also the time you should be watering them as well. Of course if there has been any rainfall during this time, don’t go and water the tomatoes again.

When your plants begin to get larger you will need to take the limbs gently and make sure that they are resting on the supports. This is going to let the plant get to grow taller and allow it to spread more so it can get more sun.

When you begin to see the yellow flowers you know that your plant is getting ready to produce tomatoes for you. This is a very important time of it’s growth so make sure that your plant gets plenty of water at all times. Shortly after the flowers appear they will begin to form into tomatoes and they will soon be ready to be picked. You can usually pick your tomatoes the very first day after they turn fully red. However; if you want them a little bit riper you can wait a couple more days and then pick them. To pick simply twist gently off of the limb like you are twisting off a bottle cap.

Don’t stop checking your plants on a regular basis once they begin producing the fruit, you need to stick with the routine you started with and make sure that you also trim off the dead and wilting limbs that might occur during the summer. This is going to help your plants to continue producing for you through the entire summer.

Some watering tips you might want to take heed to; try watering your plants in the early hours of the day till around 10 am or begin around 6 pm in the evening until the sun goes down. It is never a good idea to water any of your plants when it’s during the heat of the day. Also remember that your entire plant loves water so don’t forget to water the whole plant when you are watering them.
