The Amazing Aspects of the Largest Organ in the Human Body – Skin

The largest organ that the human body has is the skin. Skin is a wonderful organ that has a very important and vital function for the human body. It has a lot of great features and abilities, and also is made up of three different layers.

The Subcutaneous Layer – This layer lies below the dermis. It is known as the fatty layer of the skin. The Subcutaneous layer is full of fat cells and hair follicles that are on the deepest layer of the skin. The fat cells are what gives the skin its firm and full cushion feeling.

The lowest layer of skin also is meant to insulate the body. The layer monitors any heat loss or heat gain the body might have. This layer lessens with age, which is a reason why babies have soft, round cheeks and many of the elderly have more hollow cheeks.

Middle Layer – The Dermis: The dermis layer is the middle layer. It contains hair roots that allow hair follicles to grow. All hair follicles have an oil gland, which allows for the production of sebum. Sebum is an oil that conditions the skin and the hair follicles in it.

Sweat glands are also found in the dermis layer. The dermis also is sensitive to touch. It has sense organs for pressure, pain, temperature, and other touches. These nerve fibers and blood vessels are found through out the dermis.

The dermis layer also produces two important proteins, elastin and collagen. Elastin is what gives the skin its elasticity and stretching ability. The environment, however, can affect it, which is why skin wrinkles and loosens with sun exposure. Collagen is what gives the skin fullness and strength. It also is used to heal the skin when it is hurt or cut, and an over-production of collagen can cause scarring.

Epidermis Layer – The epidermis layer is the top layer of skin that you can see. It is made up entirely, or at least almost entirely, of dead skin cells. The epidermis stops germs and other harmful substances from entering the layers of skin and thus the body.

The epidermis layer has a cycle that sheds and renews itself each month. It is full of different, living layers that allow it to continue to create, shed, and renew itself. It also produces Langerhans, which produces antibody production. Langerhans protect the skin from infection. The epidermis also produces Melanocytes, which is what gives the skin its color and pigment.

The skin is a vital organ for the human body. It has amazing abilities and functions. We would not be the same with out it.
