I began just by baking cakes and mini-cakes for family and friends – for specific occasions, or just as a token to say ‘thank you’ etc. The personal touch involved in this was always met with pure delight, and an acknowledgement that a gift of this nature was significantly more special than just going out and buying something.
After she had seen some of my initial endeavours, one of my friends asked me to do her triplets’ birthday cake for their 13th birthday. Obviously I was delighted to have been asked, but I didn’t really know what I was doing, and it was very much trial and error at this point. Fortunately, the trial and error process is something I enjoy. I like being given a challenge, and working out how I’m going to do something.
Then, one of my friends decided that her triplets’ 13th birthday needed commemorating in a special way, so she asked me to make the cake, with a vague football-related theme as a starting point. I was very pleased to do it, but don’t mind admitting that I was a little bit out of my comfort zone: a cake with a deadline, and three teenagers relying on it, was something new. I knew what I wanted to accomplish, but didn’t really know how to execute it. Happily, I enjoy being challenged, and cracked on with some serious trial and error.
I also love the meticulousness of the details and finishing touches, and finding what personal ingredient will make that cake unique and exclusive to that person. I get a lot of pleasure from putting each cake together, beginning from the basic theme and/or specific requests from the client, and allowing the cake to blossom into the finished article.
It’s a fantastic feeling to be able to create a product that tastes delightful, and that people love to eat. However, my main drive comes from the responses the cake receives when the client first sees it: right from the beginning, this absolutely became the best part of the process for me. The range of pleasure, astonishment, amusement, delight and surprise caused, is just amazing, and as a result, I have determined to rearrange my schedule whenever possible, in order to be present myself, when each cake is collected or delivered. The ‘reveal’ is just a lovely moment, and I want to be there to enjoy it too.
It’s great when people want to put off cutting and eating it for as long as possible. One cake was ordered by a group of clients, for no other reason than to treat themselves to a little indulgence. When I delivered it, I was met with great enthusiasm at the anticipation of simply eating cake. However, when they saw it, they loved it so much, that that simple desire apparently had to yield to their reluctance to actually cut into it. That response is very sweet and very rewarding. However, the whole point, folks, is that you’ve ordered a cake: cake is really delicious, and is essentially made to be eaten.
