The pill, formally known as an oral contraceptive, has changed a lot over the decades. The new concoctions are much easier on your body, have fewer side effects and haven’t lost effectiveness.
You may be wondering, however, if they are potentially causing weight gain in your body. There seems to be quite a lot of confusion and controversy regarding this issue.
Well, the science shows that they can. However, the gains in weight were modest. Here are the possible mechanisms that can cause said weight gain:
1. Poor insulin functioning. This is more of an issue for women with pre-existing insulin issues. The main problem with decreased insulin functioning is that it can cause weight gain. One way to tell if you have poor insulin functioning is to look at the size of your abdomen.
2. Less adrenalin. Also known as catecholamines and fight or flight hormones, adrenalin is a critical substance for accelerated fat burning. Not only does it mobilize fat, but it also gives you a massive jolt in energy. Unfortunately, contraceptives can decrease adrenalin levels.
3. Compromised amino acids. Unfortunately, some contraceptives can change the amount of amino acids available for repair. And if your body can’t repair itself the way it should, you won’t recover as well from your workouts which in turn can decrease your metabolism.
4. Bloating. Since contraceptives are estrogen-like substances, they can cause excessive water retention which can leave you with the dreaded bloated look. One way around this issue is to take diuretics. This approach, however, may not be very good for your health.
In the end, deciding not to take contraceptives is a very personal decision. And remember that each individual will react differently to contraceptives.
If you are not happy with how your body is reacting, however, definitely talk to your doctor. And keep in mind that you can always suspend use until you reach your fitness goal, and then resume taking them.
Finally, I would like to point out that acting on the information in this article is critical if you don’t want to forget what you have learned.
