The Fight Against Gum Disease

This dentist exerts extra effort in figuring out a cure for a disease which would be eliminated if people would take good care of their teeth. According to him, in the United States, almost 28 million suffer from gum disease or periodontitis. Majority of these people will experience tooth decay at an early stage because of this disease. The University of Washington’s center for research in oral biology reported that though the disease is not fatal, Americans spend $5 million yearly for dental health alone which exemplify that they are adversely affected by the disease.

The interdisciplinary fight against gum disease includes research in electrical engineering and biochemistry as well as studies in the schools of medicine and dentistry. But in all their research they’ve found no better preventive than regular brushing and flossing of the teeth. The teeth are held in the bone by connective tissue called collagen. Collagens are like wires but if anything disrupts its structure, it will result to possible teeth loss which is caused by plaque.

Plaque consists of 99 percent of microorganisms, or bugs. Inflammation is induced in the gums and in the supporting structure beneath. The bacteria colonizes on the surface of the teeth and without proper brushing and dental flossing they soon expand into mini states, maxi nations and join together as tooth conquerors. The research goes on and the public’s demand for a miracle increases just because a lot of people won’t brush their teeth. Earlier this year, reports came from Europe of a mouthwash that prevented plaque build up by killing bacteria in the mouth.

The British Army during the World War II used bactericide chlorohexidine on surgical equipment to get rid of germs, said the dentist. In fact, a Danish scientist found that it works as a mouthwash but it still needs a few improvements. One of the reasons for this was that it blackens the teeth after a while of applying it. He said that as a temporary result, one will not be able to have a sense of taste.

But more serious than that is the structure of this molecule is such that it has the potential of inducing cancer. Although for a long period of time, we take drugs with this kind of molecular structure and even inject it in animals and now, it is founded to cause cancer. And there is yet another problem with the drug. It can clean your mouth too much.

In an unrealistic way, think that sterilizing and killing all the bugs in your mouth is possible. In reality, our entire gastrointestinal tract contains bugs. These bugs in fact are very important for they provide Vitamin K, speeds up digestion, and contribute to the metabolism of the human system.

I don’t know if it would be good or bad even if we could get a drug that selectively kills plaque forming bacteria. I will bet my dollar on bacteria outwitting drugs. Actually, people ignore almost all gum diseases. Simply brushing the teeth will work if they only do it. The disease is curable if they will just do it. But I don’t think the public will actually do something about it.
