A fruit and a vegetable are two very different types of food. Yet, many dieters assume that both are equally healthy.

And the bad news is that too much fruit can make losing weight harder than it has to be.

So here are 6 things about fruit that you need to be aware of:

1. They have sugar: And if you have a lot of fruit in one sitting you can overload your system with sugar. Although the sugar from fruit digests at a slower rate, it does cause your liver to produce more LDL and triglycerides.

2. Smoothies are not good for weight loss: You see, smoothies are a liquid source of calories. And any time you liquefy calories you speed up the absorption of their contents. This in turn will spike blood sugar and shut down the oxidation of fat.

3. Combinations of fruit are better than super fruits: Having a bowl of oatmeal with blueberries won’t be as healthy as a bowl of oatmeal with a combination of berries. So avoid focusing on one type of fruit and try to have a combination of fruits.

4. Darker is much better: The darker the fruit the better. Don’t fall for the alluring colors of lighter fruits. Although pretty, the darker colored fruit will be highest in anti oxidants and nutrition. Keeping this in mind, the occasional light colored fruit is just fine.

5. Fruit juice is almost as bad as soda: In fact, if the fruit juice is processed it can be worse than soda. You see, not only is fruit juice stripped of all the healthy fruit components, but it gets processed which eliminates the anti oxidants.

6. Fruit during breakfast is best: The reason being is that your liver is empty when you wake up. And eating fruit will refuel it. You can also have some fruit before working out to prevent your blood sugar from dropping.

Eating fruit for the sake of health and weight loss is not a wise decision. You will be far better off having vegetables instead!
