The Right Timing For Skincare

“A time for birth and a time for death; a time for planting and a time for uprooting” is a famous quote from the Bible. Actually there is also a time for different skincare procedures with reference to the internal activities of human bodies. If you are able to catch the right time for your skincare procedures, you will receive maximum effect of your skincare products and treatments.

Under our skin, there are sebaceous glands which secrete sebum (oil). Though we may feel oily for this sebum secretion, it is the natural and powerful protection to our skin. The sebum is mostly secreted from 8am to 12 noon. That means our skin is the best protected during this period of time. Under this natural protection, our skin is most resistant to irritation and we can perform salon treatments like freckle and hair removal, acne treatment, lacer treatment and peeling. In addition, our skin also has the highest restoration power during this period of time. Therefore, any irritation caused by the salon treatments can recover at the highest speed.

After the active activities in the morning and that blood circulation focuses on digestive system, skin is tired in the afternoon. It is the best time for moisture replenishment. You may hydrate your skin with water spray or toner. This prevents the formation of fine lines and the meltdown of makeup. Try not to drink coffee in the afternoon as coffee speeds up the moisture loss in your body.

Skin cells are not going to be tired from noon onwards; they gain back their vitality after 4pm. It is because all the foods are digested in around 4 hours from noon and skin cells absorb a lot of nutrients. The absorbed nutrients provide energy for the brain, heart and lung to function. When these organs function properly, the oxygen content in blood increases, which leads to higher skin absorbency. From 4pm onwards, it is best to let our skin enjoy a relaxing and detoxifying spa. We may do exercises to enhance the detoxification effect.

When I was young, my mother told me not to remove my blackhead at night. I thought it was a joke but now I think it is more reasonable. At the night from 8pm to 11pm, our blood pressure decreases. We may easily experience swelling (edema) and inflammation during this period of time. That is the reason why we should avoid the irritating acne treatment and blackhead removal at night. After 11pm until 5am, the skin cells go through another physiological cycle. During this period, skin cells actively grow and regenerate. They attain their maximum absorbent ability. Therefore, it is important for us to apply nourishing and restoring skincare products before we go to bed at 11pm.

Finally, from 4am to 7am, the secretion of adrenal cortex hormone increases significantly. Adrenal cortex hormone is a hormone that inhibits the formation of protein. During this period of time, skin cells are inactive and are not able to excrete all the metabolic water including moisture out. The accumulated moisture leads swelling in eyes, face and legs the next morning when you get up.
