High protein diets like Atkins are very seductive because they induce a lot of weight loss in very short periods of time.
The issue here, however, is that the weight loss is mostly water and to a lesser degree, muscle.
So here are some things that happen to your body when you stop eating carbs:
1. Poor moods: Without carbohydrates your brain cannot produce enough serotonin. And without serotonin your mood will worsen. Your outlook on life will deteriorate. You see, carbohydrates provide the building blocks by which serotonin is made.
2. Lean muscle protein oxidation: Without carbs in your diet, your body will burn through lean muscle like a knife through butter. You see, carbs are your body’s preferred source of fuel. And if the primary source of fuel is gone, your body will burn lean muscle for energy.
3. The need to constantly sleep: Even if you got a full night’s sleep, a lack of carbs will increase your sleep drive during the day. In extreme cases, you will need to frequently nap only to find yourself still tired upon waking up.
4. Less recovery: Carbs help your body recover from intense exercise. After all, intense exercise causes a lot of damage in your body. And repairing this damage requires a lot of energy. Energy that is best provided by carbohydrates.
5. Intense pain during exercise: Carbohydrates help your body stay out of an acidic state. If you stop eating carbohydrates, acidity levels will rise and exercise will become extremely painful. So keep this in mind before eliminating carbs.
6. Muscular dehydration: Your muscles need an ample level of hydration to get that toned and tight appearance. Without proper hydration, your muscles will look like half deflated water balloons, jiggly and wrinkly.
Eliminating carbs from your diet is not a good strategy for achieving the body you want. So make sure you take heed of the advice in this article!
